Sweet Freedom: Leaving Behind Harmful Habits and Addictions

About

Sweet Freedom: Leaving Behind Harmful Habits and Addictions is a faith-integrated recovery course designed to help participants understand addiction, address its underlying causes, and develop a practical path toward lasting change. Led by Dr. Jennifer Jill Schwirzer, the course brings together biblical theology, psychology, neuroscience, and evidence-informed recovery strategies in a compassionate, hope-centered framework. Participants explore addiction as a struggle involving desire, worship, free will, and the need for God’s transforming power. The course examines how shame, self-medication, trauma, stress, isolation, secrecy, distorted beliefs, genetics, and difficult life experiences can contribute to harmful patterns. Guided exercises help participants identify emotions, uncover the beliefs and stories beneath them, challenge distorted thinking, and replace falsehood with truth. The course also explains how addiction affects the brain’s reward, motivation, and survival systems, contributing to cravings, desensitization, reduced enjoyment, and conflict with personal values. Participants learn that the brain can heal and develop healthier patterns through repeated, intentional choices. Sweet Freedom also applies these principles to behavioral addictions such as pornography, compulsive sexual behavior, gaming, internet use, and social media. Each participant creates a personalized recovery plan that may include spiritual devotion, supportive relationships, counseling or coaching, group accountability, physical health, continued learning, and changes to their environment. Reflection questions, assessments, and practical action steps help participants move from insight to daily practice. Sweet Freedom offers a structured, grace-filled approach to recovery grounded in honesty, responsibility, community, and hope.
