Thank You, Thief

Let us turn our thoughts today
To a man of low estate
Whose path led to iniquity
Where all he had was swept away
They put him high above the crowd
The condemnation oh, so loud
He’d started out so strong and proud
Now all he felt was grief
But thank you,
Thank you, thief
Let us think of lessons learned
From this ragged sinner’s plight
His wasted opportunities
But then the sharp turn toward the light
He could have cried, “It’s just too late!”
But something changed his dance with fate
The man who hung beside him—wait
Was that the Son of grief?
Thank you,
Thank you, thief
Let us put ourselves inside
The mind of this lost man
He knew he earned his judgment
But then Messiah came to him
We all have thieves inside of us
We’ve fallen short, we’ve broken trust
We might not end up on a cross
But still this sweet relief
Thank you,
Thank you, thief
Let us honor faith that claims
The offer of free grace
When, empty of self-righteousness
We see the blood on Jesus’ face
And know He’s made that sacrifice
To be with us in paradise
A gift to us, to Him a price
Oh, help our unbelief
And Thank you,
Thank you, thief
For you have shown us hope that asks
For paradise, then simply grasps
The promise with our dying gasps
Of faith we crown you chief
Thank you,
Thank you, thief
