Five Mental Health Boosters for the New Year 🧠🤝💭💪🙌

As the new year begins, it’s natural to reflect on areas of growth and set goals for a healthier, happier life. For many of us, mental health tops the list, and while there’s no magic formula to transform our minds overnight, small, consistent steps can lead to meaningful change. That’s why it isn’t about quick fixes. Here are five practical “mental health boosters” to help you wherever you are on your journey. Whether you’re feeling strong or struggling, these little boosters are designed to support your well-being and provide actionable ways to thrive in the year ahead. Let’s dig in!

Booster #1- Love Your Brain 🧠

I read a story recently of a young man’s ADHD worsening because he’d started running track and didn’t increase his water intake, so became dehydrated. The point is that the laws of health impact mental health. The brain is a physical organ, so love your brain and care for it by caring for your body. Our course Anxiety & Depression Relief gives oodles of techniques for brain health. Consider treating yourself to a subscription!

Booster #2- Build Connections 🤝

As humans made in the image of a relational God, we must bond in order to bloom. Loneliness, especially since the pandemic, is epidemic. Isolation tends to build on itself, so these patterns can be hard to break. The best first step is to connect to God, the safest of all relationships. His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). Then, find a church family or other faith community. A great option is Abide’s Food for the Heart Bible Study each Friday night!

Booster #3- Think Straight 💭

The connection between thoughts and feelings cannot be disputed, and it follows a specific pattern: Thoughts lead, feelings follow. Many experience transformation when they simply learn to manage their thought lives. Thankfully, thought management doesn’t make us into robots—far from it! God cares about our feelings, and ultimately heals them through the axis of the wonderful mind He gave us. “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Our toolbox has some excellent FREE resources to help you with this.

Booster #4- Rediscover the Will 💪

One of the most harmful habits of mind is called an “external locus of control.” This mindset says, “My life, happiness, courage, and productivity are entirely outside of my control.” Did you know that it’s possible to re-establish an internal locus of control, and that a sense of agency can boost mental health? Here’s how author Ellen White said it: “Keep the power of the will awake; for the will, aroused and rightly directed, is a potent soother of the nerves.” Testimony 1, 557. Booster #5- Get Help 🙌

We often try to navigate life independently, but sooner or later, we all face mountains too steep to climb alone. While believers rightly look to God as our ultimate Helper, His Word also encourages us to seek support from others: “There is safety in a multitude of counselors” (Proverbs 11:4), and “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). Faith-based mental health coaching embodies this principle, offering personalized guidance for your unique journey. At Abide Network, our trained coaches provide a safe space to unpack challenges, set meaningful goals, and rediscover the hope and resilience God has placed within you. Taking care of your mental health is one of the best investments you can make in yourself. Don’t wait to thrive—take that courageous step toward healing and growth. Connect with a coach today and experience the power of walking your mental health journey with someone who truly understands.
